- Discussion Week 43 -
- Friday the 3rd of March -
- If you were stranded on a desert island and could choose 3 items to bring with you, what would you bring? -
This sounds like a pretty simple question, but!
There's a twist, I am going to give you the list of items when you come into class on Friday!
I have the list here ready, but I won't tell you what it is.
The only hint I'll give you is that of the items that will be available, you won't be getting something like a cellphone or a GPS device. It's not going to be easy.
Let's talk about that.
One of our students has asked for this topic!
So, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) is continuously being improved on and getting smarter and smarter. Slowly, A.I. is taking over humans in thinking capability for multiple different applications, recently (April 2015) an A.I. managed to beat one of the best human players at shogi.
Also, the student mentioned that they had watched a movie recently called "EX MACHINA" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYGzRB4Pnq8) in which humans create an A.I. that has to figure out the human concept of "love" in order to pass a kind of test.
It sounds kind of scary that it might be able to figure out such abstract concepts.
The point our student wants to make with this is that the reason Humans have been at the top of the food chain for so long is because of our intelligence.
Why do we continue to strive to make something that could overtake our ability and in doing so, take over us generally?
Should we continue A.I. development, or should we stop now before we are overtaken?
Does the prospect of A.I. taking over make you nervous about our future?
Let's talk about that.
