- Stress Relief

This week we have a student suggested topic, so let's see what we know about this topic.

How can we reduce stress? What is the most effective method, and is it maybe better to prevent stress in the first place?

Is there an issue with stress in Japan?

What causes it?

Is there anything being done about stress for Japanese people?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 4th of June -

- Personal preference vs. Politcal correctness

We all have our own personal feelings towards all kinds of things. We don't have to tell anyone about them, and we don't have to act on them.

If we have a bias or a dislike towards a certain person, or group of people, we may be considered to be bad people, we could be labelled "racist", "sexist" or "fascist".

But this is part of what is known as political correctness, you should not hate anything.

Do you think political correctness is good, and do you think you should (due to societal pressure) not hate anything/anyone?

There was a case in which a elementary school vice-prinicipal distributed this letter to parents. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2017/02/17/national/osaka-preschool-scrutinized-passing-slurs-koreans-chinese/#.WSpCtjOB31w

Now, seeing as she acted on her hate in some way (distributing this letter), I understand it can be seen as wrong or bad. But should she be seen as a bad person for having her own personal views towards a certain person or group of people?

Why does society care so much about what you feel towards others(in the case of hate)?

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 8 - Friday the 26th and Sunday the 28th of May

 - Discussion Week 8 -

- Friday the 26th of May -

- Music that glorifies criminal activity

In some music, the lyrics will talk about how doing drugs is good, or how shooting people is ok, or being a gang member is cool or how they want to rob someone or something like this.

The people who sing these lyrics are often seen as role models for young people.

Do you think music like this is ok to distribute?

Should it be regulated or in extreme cases even banned?

Why do you think these kinds of messages appear in music?

I apologise in advance, the following link contains course language.

This link is an example of lyrics that glorify crime.

- Lab grown meat

With scientific advances these days, we can now grow meat in the laboratory.

Do you think this is useful?

Should we move away from killing animals for meat and try to grow it in the lab?

What kinds of applications could lab grown meat have?

The most difficult question is: Do you think that vegans/vegetarians would be able to eat lab grown meat (its no longer an animal product)?

Here is a link to information about lab grown meat.

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 7 - Friday the 19th and Sunday the 21st of May

 - Discussion Week 7 -

- Friday the 19th of May -

- Kumamoto Baby Door

In Kumamoto, there's a building with a little door.

The little door can be opened, and a baby can be placed inside anonymously.

This was done to provide a place for children that would have somehow been abandoned/neglected by the parents.

The parents may not have had the finances or means to care for or raise a child, but may be against the idea of having an abortion, or even, of course, no money for an abortion (it's expensive!)

Do you think institutions like this are a good idea?

What should be done if the parents have regrets and want the child back later?

should more places like this exist in Japan?

Let's talk about that.

- Friday the 21st of May -

- Homeschooling VS. Public/Private Schooling

Homeschooling is when parents get either their own material, or material from the country's education ministry, and teaches their child from home in their formative years.

Public schooling is when we send a child to a publicly open institution for education, often these places are cheap or free.

Private schooling is when we send a child to a private institution for education, these places usually have difficult screening procedures and are expensive.

Which is better?

Do you have faith in the public schooling system?

Do you think homeschooling could be a form of brain-washing?

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 6 - Friday the 12th and Sunday the 14th of May

 - Discussion Week 6 -

- Friday the 12th of May -

- The Bell Curve

This week we'll talk about intelligence, race, and social morals.

The book "The Bell Curve"(1994) is about the measurement of I.Q. of people from different races, social backgrounds and walks of life.

The authors of this book have been harshly criticised as racists and that they didn't submit their work for peer review before publishing.

There were possible measurement errors, group biases etc. but the authors haven't said their research was conclusive.

Rather than criticise the book or the authors or the methods they used, I want to talk about the social morals, whether or not its really a good idea to try to see if there is a difference in intelligence across races, social backgrounds etc.

Do you think it's a bad idea to try to see if certain people are smarter than others?

The book also mentions that those who have high I.Q. (cognitive elite) were becoming further and further separate from people with lower intelligence in society by using their smarts to get richer, do you think that is a fair statement?

Here are some links about this topic:

Let's talk about that.

- Homeless Deterrent -
In some places which may seem like a good place for homeless people to take a nap, governments/city councils/businesses have taken to installing some kind of "homeless deterrents".
For example spikes on the ground or by a door/window to make the ground uncomfortable to sleep on. Or water sprinklers that activate when people stay near a certain place for a certain length of time.
Or park benches designed to be uncomfortable to stay on for a long time.
Are these methods inhumane?
Furthermore, do you think that businesses reserve the right to keep their storefronts clear?
Is the government just giving a mean, temporary solution to a problem they need a kind permanent solution for?
Here are some links about this topic:

Let's talk about that.
